The Name
Choosing a name for someone you have never met before is a challenge. You suddenly find yourself surrounded by tons of opinions and options. Not to mention the burden of giving someone a label that will follow them throughout their life. We wanted to choose something that would carry meaning for us, be unique, and be acceptable for her.
I recall one night, years ago, where we lay under blue lights talking about the possibility of children. And the song Halcyon & On & On by Orbital started playing. As we lay listening to the song, we thought Halcyon could be a beautiful name for a girl. We smiled, laughed, and forgot about it.
After we discovered she existed, we began thinking about what we would call her. We remembered that night under the lights and both agreed that this should probably be her name. After researching the name, I fell more in love with the meaning. Being air and water signs, we found it amusing that Halcyon's mythical power was to bring tranquility to the wind and sea. And finding out she would be born at the lowering of the Pleiades in May gave more reason that this name was special.
The name Halcyon means peaceful and tranquil. And is quite rare. We also wanted to give her another name that would be more acceptable and counter some of calmness of her first name. We chose Ember, the glowing remains of a fire, still able to ignite.
