The Pleiades, the seven sisters, are a cluster of stars in the constellation Taurus. One of the few groupings of stars that is visible with the naked eye. They sit directly across from the easy to identify Orion's belt. The cluster is composed of hot blue stars and were formed in the last 100 million years and will continue to burn for 250 million more. The brightest star of the grouping is Alcyone.
Alcyone sits in the constellation Taurus, designated at Eta (25) Tauri with apparent magnitude of 2.86 and its stellar classification is B7IIIe.
Alcyone became associated with the cluster of stars around 2000 BC when the Pleiades rose early during the winter solstice. Witnesses believed it was the work of the mythical Halcyon bird who controlled the sea and air during this time. The Pleiades were also known to rise in May marking the navigational year and ended during the Halcyon Days of winter solstice. This tied into the legend of Alcyone being the protector of sailors from rough seas and wind.
